What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is all about keeping the body functioning at its most optimal state of health. Chiropractors do this by examining the spine and how it relates to the nervous system. Hippocrates (460-377 BC), the father of modern medicine said, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” Hippocrates believed only nature could heal and it was the duty of a physician to remove any interference preventing the body from healing.

Chiropractors do a comprehensive exam utilizing orthopedic tests, neurologic tests, palpation, muscle testing, and Chiropractic analysis in order to determine which of your spinal vertebrae (bones) of the spine are out of their proper alignment.

When your vertebrae are out of alignment, they cause pressure on the nerves, discs, and ligaments in your spine. Chiropractors refer to this as a vertebral subluxation. These subluxations, as Hippocrates states, cause interference in your nervous system. Your nervous system coordinates all your body’s functions. It tells your body to digest your food, repair your cells, makes your heart beat and your lungs breath, and stimulates the release of hormones just to name a few of the body’s amazing functions. When there are subluxations causing nerve interference, your body cannot function or heal properly.

The goal of Chiropractic is to remove these subluxations. When we remove subluxations, the body can better heal and function. This is done without drugs, needles, or painful procedures.

Chiropractic has been described as complementary and alternative medicine. This would be similar to saying health is complementary to sickness and the alternative to disease. Which, of course, health is the alternative to sickness and disease. The problem is we tend not to look for the alternatives to sickness or disease until we are suffering from some type of sickness and disease.

To understand why we are not feeling our best we need to understand what health is.

Dorland’s Medical Dictionary defines health as “a condition of optimal physical, social, mental and spiritual well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmities”.

Let’s be honest, if you are taking prescription drugs or over the counter medication, you are not healthy! Maybe it’s time to look for a more natural way of healing. Chiropractic is what your body has been aching for!

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

After a thorough exam and Chiropractic analysis, Chiropractors use their hands or sometimes light adjusting instruments to realign the vertebrae (bones) that are out of alignment. Misaligned vertebrae are what cause the subluxations (nerve interference) in your spine. Most patients feel a great sense of relaxation after a Chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic adjustments cause the muscle to relax and the nervous system to become calmer.

The video below demonstrates how cerebral spinal fluid is moving through the brain and spinal cord before and after a Chiropractic adjustment. After the Chiropractic adjustment, you can see a huge increase in the pumping and movement of the cerebral spinal fluid.

Cerebral spinal fluid has three main functions:

  1. protects the brain and spinal cord from trauma

  2. supplies nutrients to nervous system tissue

  3. removes waste products from cerebral metabolism

By improving the flow of cerebral spinal fluid through Chiropractic your nervous system can perform better and heal quicker.

What Conditions Does Chiropractic Treat?

Many patients look for Chiropractors for relief from headaches, back pain, sciatica, musculoskeletal pain, and joint pain.

The truth is Chiropractors don’t treat any of these conditions. By removing vertebral subluxations from your spine, your nervous system starts to do what it was meant to do, it functions better. Increase functioning of the most important system in your body, your nerve system, allows your body to heal more rapidly and perform better.

So yes, patients come in with a variety of complaints. Rather than focus on what conditions Chiropractors treat let’s focus on what improvements patients can experience under Chiropractic care.

Not only will patients experience relief from their aches and pains, but they may also experience the following:

  • increased energy

  • reduced stress

  • better mobility and range of motion

  • greatly reduced need for medications and antibiotics

  • better digestion

  • alleviation of allergies, asthma, ear infections, sore throats, and constipation

This just touches the tip of the iceberg on what many of our patients have experienced after getting regular Chiropractic adjustments.

Do Children Benefit from Chiropractic Care?

As Dr. Goldstein would say, “If you have a spine, are above ground, and are breathing you need to get your spine checked by a Chiropractor."

One of the major causes of vertebral subluxations (spinal misalignments putting pressure on your nerves, discs, and ligaments) is stress.

The birth process is not only stressful for the mother (and the father trying to stay cool through the entire process), but it is also very stressful for the newborn. The baby is cramped up in the uterus for nine months and then goes from a warm friendly place in the mother’s womb to the cold outside world of the delivery room.

Like adults, babies and children can have subluxations too.

For over 30 years Dr. Goldstein has treated children with colic, asthma, recurrent ear, and throat infections, the so-called growing pains, headaches, trauma from slips and falls and many other childhood ailments.

The study below shows the difference in health between children under Chiropractic care compared to children under Pediatric care:

This study has shown that children raised under chiropractic care are less prone to ear and tonsil infections. Their immune systems were also better able to cope with allergens such as pollen, weeds, grasses, etc. as compared to children who were only under Pediatric care.

There is a significantly decreased history of antibiotic use among chiropractic children, indicating a lower susceptibility to bacterial infections as a result of greater immune system response.

Dr. Wendy M. Van Breda DC and Dr. Juan M. Van Breda DC states “[the] recovery period from any trauma or illness by their children was more rapid than that of their children’s peers."

Overall, children fare better and respond incredibly well under Chiropractic care.

I Am Pregnant, Should I See a Chiropractor?

Yes! Women who are pregnant have noticed significantly less back pain while under Chiropractic care. Chiropractic is safe for the mother and for the baby throughout the entire pregnancy.

What Will I Expect During My First Visit?

During your first visit, Dr. Goldstein will do a thorough case history regarding what symptoms you have today and what you have had in the past. This will be followed by an Orthopedic, Neurological, and Chiropractic examination. The examination will help the doctor determine if you are a Chiropractic patient. If you are not, the doctor will make the necessary recommendations to refer you to see other healthcare providers.

Can Dr. Goldstein Treat Non-Forcefully?

Absolutely! It is important that you are comfortable during your visit. Dr. Goldstein is versed in utilizing a number of various non-forceful techniques.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

One of the most common questions patients ask is, “How long will it take to notice an improvement?”

Our society is very fast paced where even instant gratification takes much too long. The best way to answer this is with a question. How long has this been going on?

Keep in mind once you feel pain the problem has been brewing for weeks, months, years or even decades. When you have pain, you have tissues and cells that have been injured and it takes the body time to replace damaged tissue and cells.

Regaining your health does not happen overnight, it takes time.

The good news is there is hope! If you follow our recommendations, together, we can help you restore and regain your health.
